Frequently Asked Questions
Will my child become a bully?
Quite the opposite. Our Bath kids' judo training builds humility, confidence, and respect. These traits turn children into the opposite of bullies — they become leaders on and off the mat.
What do I need to bring to my first lesson?
When your child first arrives at Kudos Judo in Bath, all they need are some comfy athletic clothes and a water bottle. We've got the rest covered, including a judo suit to borrow for the trial. It's normal to feel nervous before a first class — but as soon as they meet our friendly coaches and the other kids, that nervousness usually turns straight into excitement.
Do parents need to stay?
That's completely up to you. If you need some time to yourself, go grab a coffee or a bite to eat — parents deserve all the time off they can get. If you'd like to stay and watch, you're more than welcome to as well.
My child has ADD/ADHD, will Judo help?
Absolutely. While there is no 'cure' for ADD or ADHD, it can be managed. Our Bath kids' judo classes help children develop the tools they need to maintain focus and concentration. Through following the coaches, learning judo techniques, and mastering moves, kids build the habits to stay focused and on track.
Can girls also do judo?
Absolutely. Judo is for everyone — girls train alongside boys in our classes and thrive in the sport. Because judo is based on technique, balance, and timing rather than size or strength, girls can compete and progress on a completely equal footing. It builds confidence, self-defence skills, and a strong sense of self-worth, and many of Britain's most successful judoka are women. We warmly welcome girls of all ages and abilities onto the mat.
My child is not athletic, will they feel left out?
For kids who aren't natural athletes, team sports can be devastating on self-esteem — they often feel like they're letting the team down because they can't keep up. In judo, children train in a group environment but every child is on their own unique journey, going at their own pace. Some advance faster, others slower, and that's okay. What matters is that your child is having fun, challenging themselves, making friends, and growing stronger inside and out. Coordination, strength, and speed all come with time — even for kids who aren't 'natural athletes'.
My child is addicted to video games, will this be suitable?
Yes — in fact, judo might be the best solution. Martial arts are challenging both physically and mentally, which keeps children engaged and focused. Every class at Kudos is full of fun, fitness-boosting games where kids learn focus, confidence, and respect without even realising it. We disguise learning as fun and keep your child laughing and smiling — they won't miss their games for a moment.
What's different about different martial arts styles?
If you're looking at kids' martial arts in Bath, you've likely come across Karate, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and more. Karate and Muay Thai focus on striking (punches, kicks, knees, and elbows). Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on grappling on the ground. Judo bridges both worlds — it teaches throws, grips, and ground control with no striking, making it one of the most well-rounded martial arts for children. And unlike other martial arts, children aren't limited with how much they can train — judo has a very low injury risk, whereas with striking-based martial arts that risk increases significantly with training volume.
