THE MORAL CODE

The Eight
Moral Codes.

Inspired by the French Judo Federation — home to the world's most successful youth judo culture — these eight moral codes are the foundation of every Kudos lesson.

IN DETAIL

What each code means on the mat.

These values are taught in every session — not as slogans, but as behaviours. Coaches name them out loud when they see them. Over time, children carry them off the mat too.

  1. 01

    Politeness

    礼儀 · 一

    Respect for others.

The starting point. Politeness is how respect becomes visible — in the bow at the mat edge, in how we greet a training partner, in how we disagree. It puts every judoka on equal footing, regardless of age, grade or background.

  2. 02

    Courage

    勇気 · 二

    Doing what is right.

Courage isn't about being unafraid — it's about stepping onto the mat anyway. It's trying the technique you've never tried, competing when you're nervous, and standing up for what is right, even when it's hard.

  3. 03

    Sincerity

    誠実 · 三

Expressing oneself without disguising one's thoughts.

Say what you mean. When a judoka is sincere, training improves — feedback between partners is honest, progress is real, and the dojo becomes a place of trust.

  4. 04

    Honour

    名誉 · 四

    Being true to one's word.

If you say you'll train, you train. If you say you'll do your best, you do. Honour is the quiet promise a judoka keeps — with their coach, their partners, and themselves.

  5. 05

    Modesty

    謙虚 · 五

    Speaking about oneself without pride.

The best judoka we've ever met are the quietest about what they've achieved. Modesty leaves room to keep learning — and reminds us that every black belt was once a beginner.

  6. 06

    Respect

    尊敬 · 六

Without respect, no trust can be built.

Respect for the coach, for training partners, for the mat, for the sport itself. Without it, judo doesn't work — you can't practise a throw with someone you don't respect, and you won't be practised on.

  7. 07

    Self-Control

    自制 · 七

Knowing when to remain silent when anger rises.

Judo teaches children to manage frustration, stay composed under pressure, and make decisions with a clear head. It's a skill that serves them long after they leave the mat.

  8. 08

    Friendship

    友情 · 八

    The purest of human feelings.

The friendships built through judo are among the strongest a child will form. You share sweat, effort, losses and wins with the same training partners for years — and those bonds last a lifetime.
